Last week saw Sandbach High School & Sixth Form College’s production of Hairspray! With three sold-out performances and a cast of over a hundred students, it was a sight to behold. Tracy was played superbly by Kat Piperakis in Year 10, who coped professionally with such a demanding role, appearing in every scene and wowing the audience with her beautiful, accomplished voice. The energy and conviction from the whole cast of actors, singers and dancers was incredible, and the battle between Seaweed (Yasmin Lowthian), Motormouth Maybelle (Lizzie Baynham) and Little Inez (Bethany Houghton, Heidi Pheasey and Sophie Reeder on different nights) and the von Tussles (Velma, played by Ella Reeder, and Amber, by Hermione Gittins) was strong. The comedy provided by Tracy’s parents, Wilbur and Edna (both cross-gender cast and played by Lydia Ravenscroft, and Will Hopton from Sandbach School respectively) was a perfectly timed and provided some light-relief from the huge theme of discrimination. The score for this production is no easy feat, and the twenty-strong band made easy work of it, sounding absolutely brilliant and supporting the soloists and the backing singers beautifully.

What a superb night’s entertainment, and certainly one to remember for the cast, band and crew; the whole audience was engaged from start to finish and those involved clearly had a fantastic time.
