The clubs

At Sandbach High and Sixth form College we have a long history of success with our STEM clubs. Our students have gained experience outside the core curriculum on a range of STEM disciplines; through building and racing cars in our F24 Greenpower team to designing projects for TeenTech in our STEM club. Students have the opportunity to gain experience in engineering, motoring, business management, publicity, and much more. As a school we are really proud of the dedication our students have to developing their skills in STEM, both within lessons and beyond the classroom through our many extra-curricular STEM clubs.

What is Greenpower?

Greenpower is a UK-wide educational challenge that inspires young people to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) by designing, building and racing electric cars. It’s run by the Greenpower Education Trust, a charity that uses the excitement of motorsport to help students develop real-world engineering and problem-solving skills. Students work as teams to create single-seater electric vehicles that compete at regional events and National Finals across the UK. The aim is to nurture technical knowledge, creativity, teamwork and resilience in an exciting, hands-on environment rather than a traditional classroom setting.

CAUC at Sandbach High School

At Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College, our Greenpower team is known as CAUC — short for Complete and Utter Chaos. CAUC is a long-standing and highly successful extra-curricular team made up of students aged 11–18 who design, build and race electric cars in the Greenpower F24 class.

More than just a racing project, CAUC offers students an authentic engineering experience that mirrors the challenges and responsibilities found in professional engineering environments. Students take ownership of every stage of the process, from design and manufacture to testing, race strategy and maintenance. The team's ethos is built on inclusivity, creativity and teamwork, with a particular focus on encouraging more young people — especially girls — to explore careers in engineering, technology and other STEM disciplines. As members of the team, students develop valuable technical, leadership and problem-solving skills while tackling real-world engineering challenges. These experiences provide a strong foundation for future success and have helped many alumni progress to STEM-related degrees, apprenticeships and exciting careers across engineering, motorsport and advanced manufacturing.

Competing at iconic motorsport venues such as Silverstone Circuit, Goodwood Motor Circuit and Castle Combe Circuit, CAUC consistently performs at a high level and regularly qualifies for international finals. These achievements showcase the talent, determination and engineering excellence of our students.

STEM racing (F1 in Schools)

STEM racing (formally known as F1 in Schools) is a global STEM challenge where students design, engineer, manufacture, test, and race miniature F1-style cars, competing not only on speed but also in design, innovation, project management, branding, and presentation. Teams progress from regional competitions to national and even world finals, gaining real-world engineering, teamwork, and business skills along the way.

At Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College, our students have achieved outstanding success through a series of exceptional F1 in Schools teams:

  • Storm Racing – Winners of the Girls in Motorsport Award and three-time Regional Champions, Storm Racing exemplifies innovation, teamwork, and a passion for STEM.
  • Nebula Racing – Two-time Regional Champions with two National Awards, including the prestigious Research and Development Award, Nebula Racing has consistently impressed with technical excellence and creative problem-solving.
  • Sigma Racing – Achieved Regional and English Champions titles, along with three additional National Awards, demonstrating outstanding engineering, design precision, and presentation skills.
  • REPPN Racing – Recognised for excellence in Brand Identity, highlighting their professionalism and innovation in marketing and team presentation.
  • Velocity Racing – Regional Champions, showcasing speed, strategy, and collaboration on and off the track.

We currently have four new teams preparing for the upcoming Regional Championships. Keep an eye out for Sugar Rush, Xceleration, Resonance Racing, and Nova Racing as they carry forward our tradition of innovation, teamwork, and STEM excellence.

Through these teams, students gain hands-on experience in engineering, design, business, and teamwork, preparing them for future STEM careers. The consistent achievements of our students reflect the ambition, creativity, and resilience that define Sandbach High School.

Alumni

Our STEM and engineering clubs have a proven track record of inspiring students to pursue ambitious careers in these sectors. Many students have secured prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships, including two scholars sponsored by McLaren Racing. Students have also gained invaluable industry experience through opportunities with Alpine F1 Team, Red Bull Racing and the Bentley #BeInspired group. These experiences have opened doors to university placements, apprenticeships and graduate careers across the engineering sector. We are proud that former students are now studying, training and working with world-renowned organisations including McLaren Racing, Williams Racing, Aston Martin Formula One Team, Bentley Motors, Triumph Motorcycles and Boeing. Their achievements demonstrate the transformative impact that participation in our STEM programmes can have, providing a pathway to opportunities with some of the world's most innovative organisations.
